TDT-Bioart Project: Innovative Techniques for the Diagnosis and Treatment of biodeteriogens in the artistic and archaeological

The project's overall objective of identifying innovative methods of diagnosis and intervention to be applied to the field of "cultural heritage", with the two main powers required in this field: the non-invasiveness / aggressiveness and while the effectiveness of treatment.

The TDT-Bioart project consisted of a feasibility study for the development of innovative methods of intervention in the conservation of cultural heritage, in particular as regards the problem of biodeterioration, with the ultimate aim of establishing a network European project aimed at setting up a trans-national research protocols for the definition of unit of intervention on the works of art, based on best available techniques (BAT) and the excellence of know-how in this field.

In particular, the project TDT-Bioart went to verify the potential applicability of new methodologies in the two major moments of caring for a work of art: the diagnosis of any damage / problems (in particular those caused by biodeteriogens) and subsequent treatment of preservation work on the work.

With regard to diagnostics, which requires the early detection and timely manner and at the same time any non-invasive conservation issues, the project TDT-Bioart performed a feasibility study for the transfer of techniques based on laser-induced fluorescence ( LIF technique), and in particular the fluorescence lidar technique, early diagnosis of colonization of biodeteriogens walls of artistic and archaeological interest. To this end have been carried out two types of investigation:

1) a preliminary assessment of the effects of low fluence laser radiation on various types of substrates of artistic interest (eg, frescoes and murals);

2) fluorescence measurements carried out on substrates with typical colonies biodeteriogens and aimed to assess the transferability of the technique of fluorescence lidar remote sensing - already successfully used for the detection of biodeteriogens on monuments outside - the walls of remote diagnosis of interest artistic large, even in the presence of sunlight.

Compared to the response phase of a work of art, the project TDT-Bioart studied innovative methods for the treatment of agents biodeteriogens by irradiation with microwave, considering both the effect of absorption of microwave energy through electromagnetic and thermal models the feasibility of transfer of a microwave method, already successfully used for the insect of artifacts made of wood, the treatment agents biodeteriogens on stones of artistic interest.
